I 1st AD'd a short titled Stay With Me this July with Co-Produccer Christina Ochoa Lopez and Director Chad McCord.  Our DP was Roman Jakobi. We shot the film over the course of 3 days and are excited to see it debut at Hollyshorts Film Festival in LA!

I had the opportunity to AD Vista Film's new feature film, "Refuge from the Storm" starring Michael Madsen this winter.

Luckily, Shannon Volkenant was the film's script supervisor so there was at least 1 familiar face when I walked on set the first day.
 Both the cast and crew were great and I am stoked to see the final film next year.

Once again...Reese Avanessian and Alen Aivazian are up to their old tricks with the new film "Whitey Goes to Compton."  Shooting on Whitey began in October and we wrapped in December.


Reese brought me in to AD the project as well as some familiar faces such as Christian Butcher, Phil Guarnotta, Mark Legaspi, Shannon Volkenant, Sean Jennings, Spencer Scranton and Jessica Osgood to name a few.


We had the opportunity of filming with the Phantom camera at an extremely high frame rate for a large portion of the action sequences and explosions.  The Phantom footage looks amazing!

I was fortunate to once again team up with Jordan Wicht and AD his new film, "At The Movies." Shooting took place primarily at The Ken Cinema in Kensington off of Adams Avenue.  If you have never been there, it is a sweet little theater that has a knack for picking only the best of cinema.  Marie Dasteele and Colin Arsenault were our leads and put forth a great effort in bringing the script to life. 

This is Jordan's first comedy and quite a leap from his previous work like Grief & The Killer and The Bridge.  The film has already been both edited and scored and will begin hitting festivals this year.

A journalist from Sign On San Diego caught up with us while shooting and we made a quick appearance in her article, check it out.

Love in The Time Of Flannel is a 16mm short film I wrapped this spring with Jeff Gardiner and Christina Cervantes.

This is the second time I have teamed up with Jeff and Christina, our first effort being Hollywood Heights.  With equally high aspirations for Love in The Time of Flannel, we will be submitting the film to the Sundance Film Festival.  Filming took place at La Jolla High School and Valhalla High in El Cajon, CA.  Our casting director, Charda Bell-Fontenot of CBF Casting put forth by far the most impressive effort I have ever had with any casting agent. 

Victor Lou  was our AC but truly acted as a consultant for much of the production process.  We shot with his Super 16 and Prime Lens package.  The film will be out of the booth in late spring and then it's off to festivals.

I teamed up with Shannon Volkenant, Reese Avanessian, Spencer Scranton, Phill Guarnotta and Nate Elegino for a short drama titled, Meaningful Mother.  This was my first time working with a child actor which was easier than I had expected.  Luckily Shannon took the reigns and I played bad cop; keeping crew organized.  Phill brought a tripod head mounting slide tray respectively called "The Slider" that allows the camera to travel in small spaces where a dolly shot wouldn't be possible.  When we had multiple shots in a row, each on sticks, we could keep the slider mounted when moving the tripod around and tweak our camera location a lot easier than if we hadn't been using The Slider.  Much thanks to Phill's cousin for inventing it!

The film was written and directed by Shannon Volkenant and shot on  the EX1 with a Letus package.  Meaningful Mother is currently in color correction and should be in the final editing stages in time to storm festivals this summer.

Katakiuchi was a great experience because it gave me the opportunity to work at Green Screen Wizards up in Miramar which I had never done before.  The shooting style in general was pretty unique.  Joel Boling, the writer and director, knew exactly what he was looking for but didn't storyboard.  Whenever it was time for the next shot he would give a detailed description and work with the DP to create exactly what he had in mind, "Brain Storyboards" pretty much.

I was 2nd AD on this short and had a really good time working with some new people.  Craig Wilson, an associate of Green Screen Wizards, myself and the First AD, Stephanie Hoagland, are cooking up plans for a 100 page screenplay currently in pre-production.

Sssleepy Time is the brain child of writer producer Alen Aivazian, owner of Punchy Slappy Productions.  As described by imdb.com, the comedy is about  "three school girls who seek happiness from bullying old people, retards and handicapped kids that come to realize all they need to be happy is just a little loving."  I couldn't have said it better myself.  An interesting script and even more interesting set and location experience, Sssleepy Time will not soon be forgotten.  My close friend and director, Reese Avanessian, hired me as 1st AD for the film along with several colleagues I worked with while attending Film School such as Mark Legaspi, Kyle Shapiro, Michael Croomes and Christian Butcher.

Sssleepy Time was accepted by HollyShorts of Los Angeles and is competing for Best Short Picture at The International Film Festival of Ireland.
The film won "The Silver Lei Award" for excellence in filmmaking at the Honolulu Film Fest in Hawaii.

Chasing the Storm was a production of Hollywood Blacklist Films LLC.  We shot most of the film at the Lemon Grove Care & Rehabilitation Center in San Diego and the sticks of East County.  We had such a realistic car crash set that a passing car called the police and we were greeted with an onslaught of San Diego county EMTs, ambulances and fire trucks.  This experience reaffirmed for me the fact that the Producer is in charge, not the 1st AD.  I'll keep my hands in my pockets next time and avoid having my name go in any little black book.
Film Synopsis :  A girl with amnesia, Leah, is bed-ridden after an unknown tragic accident. Pierson decides it’s time to start his life over by volunteering at a local rehabilitation center. Pierson becomes assigned to take care of Leah and they soon become awkwardly close. Just as love is on the horizon, a terrible secret it revealed. Leah’s new life becomes a lie when she finds out Pierson is the reason she has been hospitalized this whole time. A fragile minded Leah must now make a touching decision – give up Pierson for his deceit; or love him for his “true intentions”.

I produced and co-edited Grief & The Killer, which was written and directed by Jordan Wicht, in the fall of 2008.  The film was shot on location in Ocean Beach, California at The Old Townhouse Restaurant on Newport Ave and at The Ocean Beach Pier Cafe.  I have shot day for night but this was my first experience shooting night for day which turned out to be less trouble than expected.  Jordan and I did all our casting at World Talent in San Diego and were extremely pleased to find  Autumn Springfield and Rhodes Osborne for the leads, Cali and Randy.

I filmed Sketchico in Northern and Southern Baja California with a small team of surfers.  Our original plan was to shoot a short film composed of multi-day surf sessions in San Miguel, a point break just North of Ensenada.  During the morning of the second day (and observation that the swell had deflated) we decided to head farther south to a point break in an abandoned fishing village named Punta Baja.  These mornings of reckoning continued, for so long in fact that 2 weeks later we found ourselves in Cabo San Lucas.  I shot the group surfing in dozens of locations, most notably Todos Santos.  Here are a few stills taken while shooting.
